Miguel Antonio Catalán Sańudo was a Spanish spectroscopist.
Examining the spectrum of the arc of manganese,
he determined that the optical spectra of complex atoms consisted of groups of lines
- which he called "multipletes"- between which existed certain characteristic regularities.
